India’s Maiden Moon mission celebrates 1st anniversary

The Chairman of ISRO Madhavan Nair has termed the experience gained from Moon Mission as a guiding light for future deep space missions. India’s maiden moon mission Chandrayaan I celebrates its anniversary today. The Chandrayaan I spacecraft was successfully launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on this day last year that is October 22. It took 21 days for the spacecraft to reach final lunar orbit. On November 14, 2008 on the birthday of India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indian tricolor was placed on moon’s surface. Indian tricolor painted on Moon Impact Probe (MIP), was one of the payloads built by India. Another significant achievement of Chandrayaan I was that it detected evidence of water across the lunar surface. NASA’s instrument Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) aboard Chandrayaan-1 helped to find the existence of water molecules on the lunar surface. The Chandrayaan I mission is considered as an important milestone in the history of India’s space exploration.
