India's medal hunt in the Commonwealth Games began with weightlifters bagging 2 silver and 2 bronze. On the first day, Games power house Australia has bagged 4 gold to lead the table. South Africa, Canada and Nigeria have won one gold each. India had mixed fortunes as the hosts recorded impressive wins in tennis, badminton and archery, but the swimmers disappointed. Soniya Chanu got the first medal for the hosts as she won the silver while compatriot Sandhya Devi won the bronze in the 48 kg category. Chanu said although she was a bit disappointed at not winning the gold medal, she was happy to have won the silver for India. Nigerian teenager A.M, Nwaokolo had the honour of winning the first gold of the games, winning the event. In the 56 kg category men, Sukhen Dey won the silver and Srinivasa Rao took the bronze. Australia's Kylie Palmer took the gold in 200 meter freestyle, compatriot Alicia Coutts won the women's 200 meter medley and team Australia bagged the gold in 400 meters freestyle relay for men. Ryan Cochrance of Canada with an impressive performance bagged the gold in men's 400 free style. South Africa's Chad Guy Dertrand won the men's 200 meters butterfly.
