The Country’s first Emplyees State Insurance Corporation medical college was inaugurated by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Gulam Nabi Azad in Bangalore on Saturday.Built over five acres at the cost of 750 crore rupees, the College of ESIC will provide seats to 100 medical students every year.Azad said, suitable amendments will be made in the law to allow doctors of Indian origin working abroad to return back to motherland and practice here.He disclosed that medical graduates who have completed Post graduation in a few identified countries will be allowed to teach in medical colleges in India. Expressing concern over growing cases of diabetes, cancer and heart ailments, the minister said Government is mulling over the idea of screening all the citizens and creating infrastructure to treat the growing numbers.Union Minister for labour and Employment Mallikarjuna Kharge, said that eight more medical colleges will be built in other states. He said that the children of workers contributing to the ESIC scheme will be given preference of admission to the medical colleges started under the scheme. He asked states to send proposals to set up ITIs preferably in Naxal affected areas and tribal areas.Chief Minister of Karnataka Jagadish Shetter, minister for labour in the state Bache Gowda and several other leaders from the Opposition were present.
