Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Dr. Farooq Abdullah today inaugurated India’s first ever commercial 2 MW Solar Power Plant in village Awan in Amritsar District. The capacity of this plant will be expanded to 10 megawatt later on.The plant set up by American Company Azure Power was inaugurated by Dr. Farooq Abdullah by switching on the button in the presence of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Singh Badal and Amritsar MP Navjot Singh Sidhu.Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Abdullah said that this is the first step towards fulfilling the Union Government target of producing 20,000 MW Solar Power by the year 2020 under its Solar Mission. Later in the afternoon Dr. Abdulla laid the foundation stone of a 60 megawatt biomass power plant at village Khumano of Fatehgarh Sahib district of the state. Speaking on this occasion he said that India has the potential of 18000 MW power generation from biomass and 5000 MW from bagasse but till now only 2000 MW capacity has been harnessed. He said that India is targeting to reduce imports of gas and diesel and for this development of renewable sources of energy is very essential.<br/><br/> <br/>
