India's commitment to peace, non-violence above any international treaty or process: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought to address concerns of international community over India not signing the NPT.

Replying to questions on non-proliferation issue raised by students of all women Sacred Heart University Tokyo today, Mr Modi said that country's commitment to peace and non-violence is ingrained in the DNA of Indian society which is above any international treaty or processes.

He said India is a land of Lord Buddha. Buddha lived for peace and suffered for peace and that message is prevalent in India.He said India refuses to sign the NPT because it considers it as flawed.

The Prime Minister cited how India undertook the freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi with the entire society being committed to non-violence, surprising the whole world.

Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met several politicians including the president of Democratic Party of Japan Banri Kaieda, Chief Representative of New Komeito Party Natsuo Yamaguchi.

He also met prominent persons like Yohei Sasakawa chairman of Nippon Foundation and Governor of Aichi Prefecture Hideaki.

The Prime Minister will deliver keynote address at an event organised by Japan-India Association and Japan India Parliamentary friend League. Later in the day he will interact with Indian community in Japan.
