The Indian women hockey team's silent protest over the non-payment of their dues seemed to have worked with Hockey India today deciding to immediately release cash reward of 50,000 rupees each for the players of the ongoing national camp in Bhopal. Hockey India interim president Vidya Stokes told reporters in New Delhi that apart from 50,000 rupees, the ad-hoc national body has requested the government to give each player one lakh rupees for their silver medal winning performance in last year's Asia Cup in Bangkok and gold in the inaugural Champions Challenge I in Kazan, Russia. But former national captain Mamta Kharb said they are not happy with the "step-motherly" treatment meted out to them by the national federation as their pending finacial dues amounts to more than three lakh rupees per player. She also said that her colleagues want a gradation system just like the one promised to the men's team in order to secure the future of the women players, who come from a relatively poor background.
