Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar has said that Indian women are playing an active part in strengthening the country's democratic institutions.

Ms. Kumar, who is in Toronto, Canada, leading a Parliamentary delegation said, increasing representation for women in Parliament and other legislative bodies and their active participation in election is an example of women empowerment in the country.

Ms Kumar, the first woman Speaker of the lower house, said empowerment of woman was India's greatest achievement, although the road to ensuring equitable representation of women in legislative bodies is still a long way off.
