On the eighth Day of the Commonwealth Games, the only medal so far for India came in shooting, as Tejaswini Sawant and Meena Kumari won bronze in women's 50 meter Rifle Prone pairs event with 1168 points. Scotland won gold while England earned the Silver. Both Scotland and England were at 1169 points but Scotish duo clinched the top spot hitting the Bull's eye. In Badminton, India's Saina Nehwal and Aditi Mutatkar advanced to last 8. Saina beat Northern Ireland's Caroline Black 21-0, 21-2 while Aditi defeated Scotland's Kirsti Glamour 21-11, 21-17. But India's S Thomas and Aparna Balan lost in the mixed Doubles category. India also lost its Rugby sevens match against Wales by 7-53. Yesterday, India regained the second spot from England on the medals tally with an impressive haul of five gold, five Silver and five Bronze medals. With one more bronze today India's overall medal tally has gone up to to 29 Gold, 22 Silver and 23 Bronze. Australia are heading the medal table with a total haul of 61 gold, 39 silver and 37 Bronze. 13 more gold medals are to be decided today. Athletics will offer the highest number of medals today with 7 golds while Aquatics Diving, Lawn Bowls will each account for 2 golds. One gold will be at stake in the weightlifting event, while Shooting will offer one more. India will be in contention for medals in Shooting, Athletics and Weightlifting. In skeet pairs. Mairaj Ahmad Khan and P Allan Danials will try to add another medal to India's already rich shooting medal haul. In athletics, Krishna Poonia will be pushing hard for a home Gold medal, backed by teammates Harwant Kaur and Seema Antil in Women’s Discus Throw event. In 800 meters women's race, Home hopes wrest with Tintu Luka who delighted the crowd by leading all the way to win her semi-final. India's Gayatri Govindaraj will be in contention for a medal in women's 100 meters hurdles. In weightlifting, only one gold will be decided today, in men's 105 plus Kilogram weight category and Sarabjit will carry the Indian hopes in this event. 20 bronze medals will be decided in Boxing while in Badminton quarter final and elimination matches will be played in Singles, doubles and Mixed doubles in both men and women categories. Indian players will also be seen in action in Table-tennis and Squash. In Hockey final classification matches will be played in women's category and Indian team will face Canada to decide the fifth-sixth position. Yesterday, teenager Deepika Kumari and Rahul Banerjee won gold medals in individual recurve events to help India end their campaign in archery with three golds, one silver and four bronze medals. Besides these two titles, India also bagged two bronze in archery through senior pros Dola Banerjee and Jayanta Talukdar in the individual recurve event. In Wrestling, World freestyle champion Sushil Kumar came up with thundering display that fetched him a gold in the 66 kg class. Joginder Kumar won the silver in the Super Heavy weight class, while Anuj Kumar grabbed the silver in the 84 kilogramme division. Anil Kumar added a Bronze in the 55 kg category. Pistol shooter Harpreet Singh and tennis player Somdev Devvarman were the others to fetch gold medals to boost the country's overall tally to 29, just one short of their record tally of 30 won eight years ago at Manchester. Vijay Kumar added a Silver in the Men's 25 metres centrefire pistol shooting, while Manavjeet Singh Sandhu bagged a bronze in trap shooting. In women's doubles tennis, the pair of Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthi collected a bronze beating their compatriots Nirupama Sanjeev and Poojashree Venkatesha. There were also two silver medals from athletics.The medals came from Vikas Gowda in men's discus throw and Prajusha Malliakal in the women's long jump. The Indian men's hockey team humbled arch-rivals Pakistan 7-4 to set up a semi-final clash with England. The Aussies will face New Zealand in the other semi-final. Olympic bronze medalllist Vijender Singh recorded the first knock out of the boxing competition to enter the Middleweight 75 kg category semi-finals. The Haryana pugilist knocked out a hapless Elias Nashivela of Namibia. Apart from Vijender, Jai Bhagwan, Dilbagh Singh, Manoj Kumar and Paramjeet Samota all entered the last four stage of their respective categories.
