Indian Railways to tap 1000 MW solar energy in five years

Indian Railways will tap solar energy to the tune of 1000 MW in the next five years. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said, his ministry has taken up a mission-oriented plan to save 41 thousand crore rupees on energy bills over the next decade. <br/><br/>He said, Solar panels will be installed on railway buildings to generate 500 MW power and another 500 MW through land based solar fields. Mr Prabhu was addressing a gathering, after commissioning various infrastructure projects on South Central Railway in Hyderabad today. <br/><br/>The Minister said, in addition, Railways have already started production of 26 MW in wind energy and are now working on converting waste to energy and commissioned two such projects.
