Indian Railways have embarked upon a mission to save 41,000 crore rupees in the next ten years through efficient energy management and power procurement. <br/><br/>Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu told Rajya Sabha today, the Railways also proposes to harness 1000 mega watt solar power to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. He explained that solar power plants with the total capacity of 500 mega watt are to be installed on the roof tops of railway buildings through developers under power purchase agreements. He added, solar power plants with an additional capacity of 500 mega watt are being planned on land based systems.<br/><br/>Minister Suresh Prabhu said in two-day service broad gauge trains, trials would be conducted on usage of power generated through roof top solar power panels for running lights and fans. Limited trials have been made on roof-top solar power panels in a few meter gauge trains and instructions for installing solar panels in the rest of the meter gauge trains have been given for long term trials, he said.
