Thirteen Indian prisoners languishing in Dubai jail due to their inability to pay blood money after conviction on non-criminal charges may soon win their freedom. It will become reality after Indian Community Welfare Committee (ICWC) that works under the auspices of the Indian Consulate decided to raise money to pay blood money for their release.

Announcing the initiative to celebrate the tenth anniversary of ICWC, its convener K. Kumar said in a press conference in Dubai that committee has identified 13 cases, all of which are non-criminal in nature like traffic or worksite accidents where deaths have been caused without pre-meditation. He informed that in its ten years, ICWC has helped in 25 such cases by raising the amount after negotiating with the victims' relatives.

Indian Consul General at Dubai Sanjay Verma and Consul, Labour and Welfare Francis Xavier Xaxa were also present on the occasion. Earlier in a separate initiative, the Indian business community in Dubai has raised 60 lakh Rupees to help blue-collar workers awaiting trial or serving sentences in the UAE jails. The Indian Business and Professional Council, Sharjah and the Indian Golfers Society (UAE) raised the humanitarian fund on 17 June. Chairman of both organisations Sudesh Aggarwal speaking on the occasion said it was part of their social responsibility.
