Indian Parliament turns 60 today; LS, RS to hold Special Sittings

Parliament will celebrate its 60th Anniversary today. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will hold Special Sittings to mark the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

AIR correspondent reports that Indian Parliament is reaching senior citizenship status sparkling like a diamond in the democratic world. The high dome of the historic central hall will witness the celebrations with President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil addressing the members of both the Houses . The world's largest democracy's ” tryst with destiny” in the last 60 years will be recalled by speakers from all the political parties on the occasion.

Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari, Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will be among those who will address the special session. The President will release 5-rupee and 10-rupee coins along with a stamp besides releasing publications of both the Houses.

Rishang Keishing, who was a member of the first and the third Lok Sabha and Resham Lal Jangde, a member of the first, second and ninth Lok Sabhas, will be felicitated on the occasion. Santoor maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Sitarist Debu Chaudhuri and singer Shubha Mudgal will light up the evening with their musical performance.

All India Radio, Delhi will broadcast live the function to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Parliament. It can be heard from 5.25 p.m. to 7.45 p.m. on Rajdhani and FM Gold Channels. Due to the live relay of the function, the news based programmes such as Market Mantra during this period stand cancelled.
