Indian Open Badminton begins in Delhi; Saina, Jwala, Jayaram among stars in action

India Open Badminton tournament has begun at the Sirifort Complex in the national capital, today. Apart from ace shuttlers like Saina Nehwal, Ajay Jayaram, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, more than 50 Indian shuttlers are participating in the 5-day long Super Series event, qualifying round of which is being played today. Top shot Indian shuttlers have been given a main draw berth, while many young shuttlers are playing the Qualification round to find a place in the main draw event.Meanwhile, promising Indian shuttlers Guru Sai Datt and Saurabh Verma were yesterday promoted to the main draw of the championship, after 12 players withdrew from the men's singles event. Four other Indians – Sumit Reddy, Rohit Yadav, Nand Gopal Srikanth, K Srikant – were promoted from reserve to qualifiers of the men's singles. Top Indians Chetan Anand and Arvid Bhat were among the 12 players who had withdrawn from the men's singles. In women's singles, Mohita Sachdeva and Tripti Murkunde were also promoted from reserve to qualifiers after withdrawal of players. In men's doubles, the Indian pairs of B Sumit Reddy and T Heman Nagendra Babu and Beneth Anthony and P H Suraj were promoted from the qualifiers to the main draw. The mixed doubles section also saw Indian pairs T Babu and P Jyotsna and Manu Atri and N Sikki Reddy being promoted from the qualifiers to the main draw.
