The Indian Navy has launched a new warship, a missile destroyer in the Project-15 alpha class at the Mazgaon Dock in Mumbai today. Ms. Elizabeth Antony, wife of Defence Minister AK Antony, launched the warship. Speaking on the occasion the Defence Minister AK Antony said that India should have indigenous warship manufacturing capability. He also said that the government will also work towards the welfare of Mazagaon Dock where the ships are manufactured. <br/><br/>Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Nirmal Verma was also present on the occasion. The indigenously made destroyer was built at India's biggest warship-building shipyard, the Mazgaon Docks in Mumbai. The 6700 ton destroyer is 163 metres long and 16 metres wide. It is fitted with the latest armaments and communication equipment. <br/><br/>The ship is armed with the supersonic BrahMos surface- to- surface missile systems to the long range surface-to-air missile system. The indigenously developed twin tube torpedo launchers and rocket launchers will add punch to the ship’s anti-submarine capability. Mazagon Dock will once more be using the pontoon assisted launching method as was done at the time of the KOCHI launch.
