Indian hockey eyes first Olympic semis since 80's

For the last 32 years, India has been trying to revive its Hockey and today another campaign in that series of revival attempts will be launched as India take on Netherlands in their opening game of London Olympics 2012. In shooting, Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang would be aiming at Olympic medals today. While Abhinav Bindra would be looking for a second successive medal, Gagan Narang would hope to be third time lucky when the duo take on 10 metre Air Rifle event of the London Games. Besides competing against each other, the duo will also face challenge from China's Zhu Qinan. India's challenge in archery team events has already ended.However, in the individual eliminations today, women archer L.Bombayla Devi will take on Kateryna Palekha of Greece. After yesterday's victory, ace shuttler Saina Nehwal will take on Lianne Tan of Belgium in women's single group E match today. In women's double group B, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will face W.H.Cheng and Y.C.Chien of Chinese Taipei. Sumit Sangwan will enter the Boxing arena for light heavyweight 81 kilogram round one. In Tennis Men's Doubles 1st Round, Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna and the pair of Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan will take on their respective rivals. Vishnu Vardhan will take on his Slovak rival in men's singles 1st round. China continues to lead the medal tally so far with 12 medals, closely followed by USA with 11.
