Indian Foreign Secretary Jaishankar visits Sri Lanka

Foreign Secretary S. Jaishanker is visiting Sri Lanka from today to further economic cooperation and discuss other bilateral issues. Mr. Jaishankar is leading a high-level business delegation and several meetings are scheduled during his three-day visit to explore opportunities in trade and investment sector. <br/><br/>During his stay, he will also meet his Sri Lankan counterpart and call on Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samarweera. The discussions will pursue various initiatives and ideas that were discussed during the recent visits to India by Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. <br/><br/>It includes the issue of fishermen, for which ministerial -level meeting is scheduled for next month in New Delhi.<br/><br/>India has been investing in the island nation in a big way with an investment of two to three billion US dollars expected in coming years. This includes setting up of a power plant, construction of road linking eastern and northern provinces and investment in petroleum exploration. <br/><br/>Both countries are also currently discussing Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) in a bid to expand trade in services and investment sector.
