The 112 Indian fishermen apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday have been remanded to 14 days judicial custody by a Jafna court. They were produced before the Magistrate in Jaffna on Wednesday. According to one official, the court has ordered the due process of the law to be completed ahead of their release.Hectic diplomatic efforts are on in Colombo to secure the early release of the fishermen. According to sources , the magistrate’s order will be contested by the Indian side to secure their release as early as possible. The newly opened Indian Consular General Office in Jaffna was granted access to the Indian fishermen and they are in touch with the arrested fishermen. Full medical check up of all the arrested fishermen was completed before they were presented before the Magistrate in Jaffna.Indian consulate officials in Jaffna said the 112 fishermen are being held along with 18 trawlers. The Indian High Commission officials are in touch with the Sri Lankan authorities, including its Attorney General Mohan Peires.
