Indian Embassy of United Arab Emirates has decided to honour 30 skilled blue collar Indian workers in a commendation ceremony to be held in Abu Dhabi on 22nd of this month. Announcing this unique initiative, the Ambassador of India to UAE Mr. Talmiz Ahamad said that these commendation will be given in recognition of the contribution of Indian workers to their nation as well as to UAE society. This is the least we could do to these people who have served the interest of both nations he added. He also said that this is the first time the embassy is hosting those who have brought great honour to the UAE and India, but who have, until now, remained anonymous during their long years of stay in the country.

The workers selected for the recognition represent eleven states of India working across all Emirates of the UAE. The selections for the recognition were based on criteria such as avoiding accidents, saving lives, working towards cutting down waste and finding innovative ways to increase productivity. The workers, being honoured, belong to seven categories in the construction sector, namely – air conditioning, technician, carpenter, electrician, mason, plumber, welder and equipment operator. According to an estimate nearly twenty lakh Indian nationals reside in the UAE, with over 65 per cent of them in the blue-collar category.
