The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has said the Indian economy is poised to grow by double digits in the next two-three years, having successfully weathered the impact of the global downturn. <br/><br/>Addressing a function organised by Merchants' Chamber of Uttar Pradesh in Kanpur, he said, global economic recession did not have much impact on India as it had on other countries. <br/><br/>The Prime Minister said, the target is to bring India to double digit growth path in the next two-three years. Dr Singh said that there were a number of inherent strengths in the country's economy which can contribute to rapid growth in the future and they should be harnessed to push up economic growth to double digits.<br/><br/>In a veiled dig at the Mayawati government over delay in project approvals, Prime Minister said central PSUs are awaiting approval from the state to set up power plants in Uttar Pradesh, which is facing electricity shortages. He said, to resolve the shortage of power in Uttar Pradesh, central PSUs, NTPC and Neyveli Lignite Corporation have proposed to set up several major power projects in the state.<br/><br/>Addressing the convocation of IIT-Kanpur, the Prime Minister said, the country urgently needs to increase quality research in science and technology especially to meet newer challenges like climate change. <br/><br/>Dr Singh also said that the government has set in motion an ambitious programme to completely restructure the legal and regulatory environment of higher education.<br/><br/>The Prime Minister was also conferred degree of Doctor of Science.
