Indian Defence personnel intensify rescue operations in rain battered Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh

As Army, Navy and Air force personnel intensified rescue operations in the rain battered Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the death toll in the affected areas has risen to 172. Of them, 156 people lost their lives in Karnataka and 16 in Andhra Pradesh. Bijapur district in Karnataka was the worst hit with 30 people perishing in the torrential rains and floods followed by Bagalkote 20 and Raichur 19. Koppal and Gulbarga bore the brunt of heavy rains for the past six days. In Bagalkot, four children and a woman are feared drowned after a boat engaged in rescue operations capsized in the Malaprabha river yesterday.<br/><br/>After the aerial survey of flood affected districts of Karnataka, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa termed the havoc as a National Calamity. He said an all party meeting will be called tomorrow and a delegation will be taken to Central Government for a relief of 10,000 crore rupees. State Revenue Minister Karunakar Reddy said over 1 lakh houses have collapsed leaving a large number of people homeless.<br/><br/>The flood situation in Andhra Pradesh is improving even as hundreds of villages are still marooned by flood waters in Karnool, Mehboobnagar and Krishna districts. Massive rescue and restoration operation are underway. About 5 lakh people have been evacuated and taking shelter in about 150 relief camps set up in different districts. Chief Minister K. Rosiah has said that the authorities are leaving no stone unturned to reduce the human and property loss. <br/><br/>Defence Ministry spokesman said Armed forces have intensified rescue operations using 13 helicopters and over 100 boats in flood-hit states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. IAF has deployed 13 helicopters, including five Mi-8s and eight Chetaks, in the two southern states.<br/><br/>In Kerala, flash flood has affected normal life at 6 places inKozhikode district. Landslides were also reported at many places in the district.<br/><br/>In Goa, large parts of the state are lashed with heavy rains for the third day yesterday with people remaining trapped in their houses. Heavy rains also continued to lash several parts of Maharashtra's coastal Ratnagiri district.<br/>In Orissa, flood water is receding fast in Balasore and Bhadrak districts. But, Jalaka, Kansabansa, Sona and Budhabalanga rivers are still flowing above the danger level. <br/><br/>Met office says the southwest monsoon is vigorous in east Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, Goa, coastal Karnataka and Kerala and active in Orissa, central Maharashtra and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
