Indian Coast Guard arrests 9 Sri Lankan fishermen

Indian Coast Guard arrested 9 Sri Lankan fishermen and detained their two fishing boats for fishing in Indian waters yesterday. The Lankan fishermen were fishing 67 nautical miles off the Nagapattinam coast in Tamil Nadu. The nine Sri Lankan fishermen apprehended by Indian Coast Guard are being brought to Karaikal Port. They will be handed over to local police today morning by Coast Guard. These fishermen will then be brought before the magistrate in Nagapattinam today. The distance between Indian and Sri Lanka is only a few kilometers.<br/><br/>Fishermen cross the international maritime boundary line often leading to arrests. More than 27 fishermen from Tamil Nadu apprehended by Lankan Navy are lodged in Lankan jail. Sri Lanka has detained 71 fishing boats of Indian fishermen as a deterrent measure. Fishermen from both sides want a lasting solution to the problem as their livelihood is affected.
