Afghan police have claimed that they have arrested two militants in eastern Paktika province of Afghanistan yesterday in connection with the murder of Indian woman writer Sushmita Banerjee. Reports quoting provincial police chief said they have confessed to their involvement in the murder saying that they killed her for writing against Taliban and for installing internet connection in her house. The killers were arrested on a tip off from the villagers from Sarai Kala village in Paktika along with weapons and explosive material. According to the reports they have also confessed their connection with Haqqani Network, a Taliban outfit. Sushmita Banerjee alias Sahib Kamala was shot dead by militants outside her house in Sharna district of Paktika province Thursday last. The gunmen came to her home at night and before abducting her tied up her family members in a room. The militants dumped her bullet ridden body outside a madarasa. Forty nine year old Sushmita was married to an Afghan businessman nearly two decades ago. Her book entitled Kabuliwalar Bangali Bou, became a bestseller in 1995. It was based on her experiences in Afghanistan and her escape from the Taliban captivity in 1980s. The book also became theme for a Bollywood film Escape from Taliban in 2003. Sushmita was living in Kolkata for a long time and recently came back to her husband in Afghanistan. She worked as a midwife here and was very popular among local people especially women.
