Indian athletes open their campaign in inaugural Youth Olympics on disappointing note

Indian athletes opened their campaign in the inaugural Youth Olympics on a disappointing note with most of them failing to get past the preliminary round and the lone weightlifter finishing fifth in Singapore today. Only shuttler Sunil Kumar Prannoy won both his group matches. Prannoy defeated Lucas Claerbout of France and Coke Dennis of Jamaica with identical 2-0 results in Pool C. The second Indian shuttler in fray, Sai Praneeth, however, lost to Huang Chao of Singapore 12-21, 21-18, 17-21in a Pool H match. Weightlifter Matsa Santoshi finished fifth in girls' 48 kg category final with a total lift of 150 kg. Chinese Tian Yuan won the gold with a total lift of 190 kg.Santoshi was the lone Indian entrant in weightlifting. In girls' rowing pair event, Thomas Nimmy and Mitali Sekhar finished fourth in heat number one and failed to qualify for the next stage.In basketball, Indian boys lost to Puerto Rico 15-33 in a Group A preliminary round match.
