The government today allayed apprehensions that global warming is likely to have an adverse impact on the agricultural operations in the country.
Responding to supplementaries during the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, the Agriculture Minister Mr Sharad Pawar said in fact,the production of food grains in the country has increased for the last five years.
Stating that the views of the experts on global warming and climate change are very confusing, Mr Pawar said Indian agricultural scientists are keeping a close watch on the situation. He said Nigeria is the only country in the world which has witnessed some adverse impact due to climate change.
The Minister informed the members that the Scientists at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have developed some new varieties of wheat and paddy. He said the government is hopeful of getting good results from the new varieties.
