India have won the Davis Cup Tennis Group 1 relegation play-off tie against New Zealand by taking an unassilable 3-0 lead. In Chandigarh today, Vishnu Vardhan clinched the second Singles against the Kiwi Number One player, Jose Rubin Statham, in four sets 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. The victory gave the hosts a two-nil lead as Yuki Bhambri had won the first Singles against Daniel King-Turner yesterday. Later, India settled the Best of Five Tie in their favour when the duo of Vishnu Vardhan and Divij Sharan defeated the Kiwi pair of Daniel King-Turner and Michael Venus in five sets. With India gaining an unbeatable lead, tomorrow's two Reverse Singles matches will be of academic interest only.
