India began its medal winning spree in the 19th Commonwealth games, bagging a silver and a bronze in the 48 kg women weightlifting. Starting as favourite to win the gold in the event, India's Soniya Chanu managed the second place to bag the silver while Compatriot Sandhya Rani Devi Atom won the bronze. A.N. Nwakolo of Nigeria won the first gold medal of the games, with a stunning performance. There are 15 gold for grabs in weightlifting.
