‘India will not rest till 26/11 masterminds are punished: PM

Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh has said that India will not rest till the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks are brought to justice. Addressing a news conference in Washington, Dr.Singh said the attack in Mumbai was a calculated attempt by the forces outside the country to destabilize the secular polity of the country and to create communal discord and undermine country’s economic and social progress. Paying homage to the innocent civilians who died in the 60-hour-long assault on Mumbai, the Prime Minister said he sincerely hopes that the combined pressure of the world community, including the US, will work to ensure that the ghastly act of Mumbai attacks will not happen again.Dr.Singh said Pakistan should to punish the culprits some of whom are roaming freely and dismantle the terror infrastructure that continues to pose threat to India.<br/><br/>On the filing of charges against seven Lashkar-e Taiba operatives in a Pakistani court, he said all steps that lead to punishment to the culprits are welcome. Dr.Singh, who discussed the Mumbai attacks case with US President Barack Obama , underlined that the conspiracy for the assault was basically hatched in Pakistan and it must bring to justice those behind it. The Prime Minister stated that the matter has been taken up with the Pakistani Government and India expects that the masterminds of the Mumbai attack and their supporters will be tried and punished. He said the infrastructure of terrorism and all safe havens have to be dismantled.<br/><br/>The Prime Minister said that strengthening internal security is the top priority of the government. He stated that Government has taken several measures to strengthen the internal security and intelligence systems in the last few years. Dr. Manmohan Singh while expressing concern over the activities of Taliban in Pakistan said that Taliban is a threat not only to Pakistan but to India as well.<br/><br/>Referring to Afghanistan , the Prime Minister said that India’s involvement there is for reconstruction and development. When asked about China’s progress in global economy, the Prime Minister said that India welcomes the peaceful rise of China and added that two countries have some problems which both the governments are trying to sort out . He also said that President Barack Obama has assured India that the US-China Joint Statement on Indo-Pak dialogue does not mean involvement of a third power in the bilateral engagement.<br/><br/>The Prime Minister also said that new directions have been set for the strategic partnership with the United States in a way that will advance India's national interests. He said he and President Obama agreed on the early and full implementation of the civil Nuclear Co-operation Agreement. Admitting that there are some minor problems in its full implementation, Dr. Singh said that these minor issues will be sorted out within next few weeks , thereby facilitating transfer of high technology to India.<br/>
