India wants Bangladesh to join hands with it to fight terrorism in all forms

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has said that India and Bangladesh have the potential to play a greater role in regional and global affairs in the years ahead and the two countries cannot afford to miss this historic opportunity to work together to be a part of the new future. Mr. Krishna said that geographical proximity makes India and Bangladesh natural partners and the two countries need a framework for co-operation on development to enable building of physical and institutional infrastructure to meet the aspirations of the people of both countries. He was delivering a lecture on 'India and Bangladesh: Partners in Progress' at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies in Dhaka today.Referring to the new challenges and non-traditional security threats for both countries due to the rise of religious fundamentalism, extremism and terrorism, he said that it is imperative for the two countries to continue to join hands to fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestation. He was hopeful that both countries would be able to resolve the outstanding land boundary issues in a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable manner. He also expressed optimism that the two sides will be able to reach an agreement on sharing of the Teesta and Feni waters through a pragmatic approach. Responding to a question about whether India would be using the transit facility to be provided by Bangladesh for transport of arms and ammunition required for security operations in the North East, Mr. Krishna asserted that India will be using the transit facility only for peaceful purposes.Earlier in the morning, Mr. Krishna inaugurated the newly built Kalabhavan complex of Dhaka University with financial assistance from India. Later, Mr. Krishna held discussions with the Leader of the Opposition and BNP leader Begum Khaleda Zia before leaving for Delhi on the completion of his three day visit to Bangladesh.
