India urges Norway to restore custody of Indian children to parents

The Indian Embassy in Oslo is making all efforts to get the custody of two young Indian children restored to their parents. The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said in New Delhi on Friday that it vigorously pursued the matter with the Norwegian Foreign Ministry on December 28 and also with the Norwegian Embassy in the national capital.

The Norwegian authorities were apprised with the need to take into account social and cultural traditions of the country to which the parents and the children belong before taking a decision to separate the children from the parents.

The children were taken under protective care by Barnevarne, Norwegian Child Welfare Services and were placed in foster parental care as per the directive of the local Norwegian court. The Indian couple, Mrs. and Mr. Anurup Bhattacharya, has appealed to the Norwegian court.
