India says it supports freedom of navigation and over flight and unimpeded commerce based on the principals of international law and believes that states should resolve deputes through peaceful means and exercise self – restraint. India urged all parties to show utmost respect for the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which establishes international legal order of seas and oceans. <br/><br/>Reacting to the award of the Arbitral Tribunal constituted under United Nations Convention, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swaroop said, sea lanes of communication passing through South China Sea are critical for peace, stability, prosperity and development. In its ruling the Permanent Court of Arbitration said there is no legal basis for China to claim historic rights within the sea areas. However, China said neither it accepts nor recognises the Arbitral Award.
