India-UK Dialogue on Extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance

India and the UK held detailed deliberations on the legal processes and procedures in either country and reviewed the requests for extradition and mutual legal assistance pending on either side. <br/><br/>The two day meeting which concluded today in New Delhi assumes significance in the backdrop of India pushing for the extradition of bank loan defaulter Vijay Mallya. <br/><br/>The two sides reiterated their determination to strengthen legal cooperation and expedite the pending requests. It was also agreed that the Central Authorities of both the countries will review further progress in these cases every six month through video conference. <br/><br/>The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary, Consular, Passport and Visa in the External Affairs Ministry and had representatives from the Ministries of Home, Law CBI and Enforcement Directorate. <br/><br/>The UK delegation was led by the Head of the UK Central Authority for Extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance, the Home Office and representatives from the Crown Prosecution Service, and the High Commission in Delhi. <br/><br/>The meeting was held pursuant to the decision taken during the visit of British Prime Minister in November last year wherein the two leaders had directed that the officials dealing with extradition matters from both sides should meet at the earliest to develop better understanding on legal processes and requirements. <br/><br/>The decision was taken to expedite pending requests so that fugitives and criminals are not able to escape the law.
