India, UAE to sign pacts on security co-operation & prisoners’ extradition

India and UAE will sign two landmark agreements tomorrow on enhancing security co-operation and transfer of sentenced persons. The agreements will be signed in New Delhi tomorrow between the visiting Deputy Prime Minister of UAE and the Union Home Minster P. Chidambaram in New Delhi tomorrow.

Addressing a press conference in Abu Dhabi today, the Indian Ambassador to UAE, M.K. Lokesh said the move is a testimony to deepening Indo-UAE ties.
The India-UAE Agreement on Security co-operation seeks to enhance collaboration between the two countries on all security related issues. These include combating terrorism, global crimes, cyber security, and money laundering and so on.

India and UAE will strengthen co-operation by sharing and exchange of information, intelligence, training and technology expertise among other issues.

The Indian Ambassador to UAE, M.K. Lokesh also told that the two countries have made good progress in extradition treaty.

Under the India-UAE Agreement on transfer of sentenced persons, the people sentenced for crimes in UAE can undergo the remaining part of their sentence in India and vice versa. At present over 1000 prisoners are at various stages of sentence in UAE Jails on different charges.

The Ambassador said it will be subject to the approval of the person concerned to apply whether he wants to spend the remaining part of his jail term in India or vice versa.
