India and UAE will sign two landmark agreements today on enhancing security co-operation and transfer of sentenced persons.
The agreements will be signed between the visiting Deputy Prime Minister of UAE and the Interior Minister Lt. Gen. Sheikh Saif Bin Zayedal Nahyan and the Union Home Minster P. Chidambaram in New Delhi.
The agreement on transfer of sentenced persons will pave the way for Indian prisoners in Emirati Jails to serve the rest of their terms back home.
The agreement on security cooperation will enhance collaboration on terrorism, money laundering, cyber security etc.
The agreement on transfer of sentenced persons will ensure that Indians sentenced in the UAE will have the option to serve the rest of their jail term back home in India. It will apply to those who have already been convicted and not the under trials.
There are around 1,000 Indians imprisoned in the UAE for various crimes including on drugs and finance-related charges.
The onus will be on the Indian sentenced in the UAE to request for the transfer of his jail term in Indian jail. He should have a minimum of six months of jail term left and no civil or criminal case should be pending against him.
The agreement on security cooperation will enhance collaboration between the two countries on global crimes, terrorism, money laundering and cyber security. It would involve sharing and exchange of information, intelligence and training.
Indian Ambassador to UAE M.K. Lokesh said the two agreements highlight increasing co-operation between India and United Arab Emirates
