Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said that India is trying for the extradition of former Union Carbide chairman Warren Anderson. He was talking to reporters in Kolkata today. Earlier, the United States said that it is prepared to give fair consideration to any fresh request from India for extradition of Union Carbide's former chief Warren Anderson over the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster. State Department spokesman P J Crowley said in Washington that there is an extradition treaty between the two countries.<br/> <br/>Meanwhile, Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily said that there is a need for a law to fix responsibility on persons involved in disasters like Bhopal. Talking to reporters in Banglore he said the Government had done its best and the delay was on the part of judiciary which diluted it . Referring to the the controversy scrounging the escape of Former Union Carbide chief, Mr.Moily said that the case against Anderson is not yet closed.<br/><br/>Mr.Moily criticised former Principal secretary to Rajiv Gandhi P C Alexander for suggesting that Former Prime Minister may have had a role in the release of former Union Carbide chief. He termed Alexander as a new convert to BJP-Shiv Sena camp. Mr. Moily said that government is working on a set of guidelines to facilitate fast-tracking of cases relating to major disasters. <br/><br/>Senior Congress leader, Satyavrat Chaturvedi today said that the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Arjun Singh had earlier admitted that the decision was taken at the state level on the Anderson issue. He urged him to speak out on the controversy. Mr. Chaturvedi said this is essential to ensure that names of others are not unnecessarily dragged into the issue. <br/><br/>Earlier, two other Congress leaders, Digvijay Singh and R.K. Dhawan had urged Congress leaders to answer how Anderson left the country. <br/> <br/>The BJP, on the other hand, asked the ruling Congress to come clean on its role in allegedly providing safe passage to then Union Carbide Chief. Party President, NItin Gadkari questioned the silence of Congress and its senior leader, Arjun Singh over the controversy. CPIM has sought a comprehensive and independent inquiry into all aspects of tragedy. <br/><br/>Party General Secretary, Prakash Karat said, a Group of Ministers will not be able to probe the failure of state agencies, judiciary and other authorities in the matter. <br/><br/>The government has set up a Group of Ministers to examine all issues including remedial measures and make appropriate recommendations relating to relief and rehabilitation of the victims of the tragedy and their families.
