India to work with US to secure NSG membership

India has said it will continue to work closely with the US to secure membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group and permanent membership of the UN Security Council. Speaking at the US-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue in New Delhi today, Mrs Swaraj said, India wants to take its defence cooperation to the next stage of co-production and co-development with the US.<br/><br/>The Minister said, for this purpose, there is a need to define the benefits associated with India's designation as a 'Major Defence Partner' of the US. She said, this will spur defence industry collaboration between India and the US and help India play the role of a net provider of security in the region.<br/><br/>Saying some steps to strengthen the cooperation in the area of Counter-Terrorism have been taken, Mrs Swaraj stressed on the need for doing more in the field. Mrs Swaraj said, the issue of totalization and recent fee hike for H1B and L1 visa have affected people-to-people exchanges. She urged US Secretary of State John Kerry to find a just and non-discriminatory solution to the issue.<br/><br/>In his address, US Secretary of State John Kerry said, India-US civil nuclear cooperation will deliver reliable electricity to Indian households. He said efforts are being made to solve security problems specially in the energy sector. Mr Kerry said, US is working to bring new technologies to help India meet its ambitious renewable energy targets. Mr Kerry said, the two countries are looking forward to finalise a cyber framework that will help protect from new global cyber threats. <br/><br/>The US Secretary said collaboration between India and the US in battling climate change is significant and he is grateful to India for offering leadership for climate change in Paris. In her speech, U S Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker said the US wants favourable trade with India and to elevate it from commercial level to strategic level. <br/><br/>The US-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue is a mechanism for advancing the United States' and India's shared priorities of generating sustainable economic growth, creating jobs, improving the business and investment climate, enhancing livelihoods and sustaining the rules-based global order.
