New Delhi today said it is verifying whether China is building a large dam on Brahmaputra, which may divert the river water and affect the socio-economic life in India. The External Affairs Ministry said India has earlier

conveyed its reservations to building of such a dam and China has categorically denied any plans in this regard. Noting that there have been three expert-level meetings on the issue since 2006, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said, India has taken up with the

Chinese side reports about the construction of a large-scale dam or diversion project for Brahmaputra. His comment came in the wake of a report in Indian Express that China has begun constructing a dam on the river as part of the Nagmu hydroelectric project which was inaugurated on 16th of March this year. Mr Prakash said the Indian side has conveyed that such a project may have significant impact on the socio-economic condition of people living downstream. He said, the government is looking into the said newspaper report to ascertain whether there are recent developments that suggest any change in the position conveyed to India by China.
