The Commerce Minister Mr. Anand Sharma today said that the government will take up the enhanced US Visa fee issue for IT professionals with the World Trade Organisation. Replying to a question on the controversy Mr Sharma described it as highly unhealthy. As the US Congress passed the legislation, New Delhi expressed serious concern over the enhanced fees, describing it a discriminatory law that will hit IT Companies in India. Mr. Anand Sharma has already written a letter to US Trade representative Ron Kirk in this regard. The Commerce Minister has explained in the letter that the hike will cost 200 million dollars annually to the IT industry and will have an adverse impact on its competitiveness and commercial interests. Washington says it is reviewing a suggestion that this bill is not WTO compliant.
