India to take ‘Look East policy’ to new level in ASEAN Summit: PM

Prime Minister has said that he will pursue new initiatives with ASEAN leaders to accelerate the process of greater economic integration with the region. Dr Manmohan Singh, who is arriving in Thailand this evening said, India's enhanced engagement with the ASEAN is at the heart of New Delhi's Look East Policy. He said, the conclusion of the India-ASEAN Trade-in-Goods agreement in August this year is a major first step in its objective of creating an India-ASEAN Regional Trade and Investment Area. He will attend the 7th India-ASEAN Summit tomorrow and the 4th East Asia Summit on 25th, besides meeting a host of leaders like Prime Ministers of China, Japan, Singapore, and Cambodia during his stay at the beach city resort of Hua Hin. He said India-ASEAN trade has grown at a healthy rate and stood at about 48 billion US dollars last year. Dr Singh said Asia's response to the global economic slowdown, food and energy security and climate change will be important issues of discussion. He said, India's participation in these summits is a vital element of India's vision of an Asian economic community that is based on an open and inclusive regional architecture. He also expressed hope that the leaders at the Summit will endorse the proposal for the establishment of the Nalanda University in Bihar as an international institution of excellence in education with a continental focus.<br/>Dr Singh will also attend the Fourth East Asia Summit on Sunday, which will review cooperation in five key areas – energy, education, finance, avian influenza and national disaster mitigation.
