India to represent in trans-Atlantic sailing race

India will be represented for the first time in the trans-Atlantic sailing race. It begins January next from Cape Town in South Africa to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. A four-member Navy yachting team is gearing up to compete with 20 other teams. For the 3,300-nautical mile race, the Navy will send its INSV Mhadei sailing yacht skippered by Commander Dilip Donde, who had earlier this year successfully completed a solo world circumnavigation on the 56-feet-long boat. Talking to newsmen in New Delhi, Commander Donde said, the race organised by the Royal Cape Yacht Club, features some of the top sailors and achievers in the yachting sport and will provide Indian Navymen exposure to the international event. Mhadei, the first such sailing vessel built in India, will compete in the cruising mono hull category of the race.
