India to provide humanitarian assistance to Africa nations

India will provide humanitarian assistance of 8 million US dollars to Somalia, Kenya and Djibouti in the African continent. These countries have been afflicted with severe famine and drought. The assistance will be provided through the World Food Programme. An official release says India has also contributed 1.5 million US dollars to the African Union Trust Fund on Somalia and half a million US dollars to the UN Trust Fund.According to a press release issued by the External Affairs Ministry, this is part of the assistance announced by the Prime Minister for augmenting the African Union Mission in Somalia announced in May this year.New Delhi will also be cooperating with Somalia in capacity building in areas such as fisheries, IT and agriculture. India is also considering extending technical assistance to Somalia in developing a counter piracy policy and strategy. The issue of Piracy is of considerable concern for India and has been taken up with the Somali side.
