India to present 8-point action plan on climate change at Copenhagen Summit beginning today

The crucial climate change summit begins in Copenhagen Monday. The 12-day meet has been divided into three parts in a bid to reach a consensus on the important issue of global warming. In the first part of the summit, chief negotiators of various countries will hold discussions to prepare a draft for the ministerial level meeting which takes places from 14th onwards. More than 80 Heads of the State and Government are expected to participate in the summit level meeting on 17th and 18th. The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will attend the summit level meeting. India has already announced to cut 20 to 25 per cent of carbon gas emissions by 2020. China has also made a similar announcement.AIR correspondent reports that New Delhi has initiated 8 point national action plan to address the impact of climate change. New Delhi has been maintaining that it is for the developed nations to fulfill their commitments on the climate change issue and it is also strongly advocating for cheaper technologies to the developing nations to deal with this problem effectively. Observers say, with India and China taking a common position on climate change issue and the US President Barack Obama rescheduling his visit to Copenhagen the prospect of breakthrough at the summit have brightened.
