India to communicate with US for access to Mumbai attack mastermind Headley

India today said it will soon write to the United States for direct access to the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist David Headley, currently under US custody.

The communication in this regard is likely to be finalised in the next few days by the Home Minister P. Chidambaram and top officials. Special Secretary, Internal Security U.K. Bansal last night met Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium in New Delhi and discussed with him about the options available before Indian investigators to question Headley.

Headley had last week pleaded guilty to all the twelve terror charges of conspiracy involving bombing public places in India, murdering and maiming persons and providing material support to foreign terrorist plots and Pakistan-based LeT operatives. He was arrested by the FBI in October last year.

Headley's lawyer John Theis said, his client will cooperate with Indian authorities as required under the terms of his plea agreement if the US government allows.

Mr Chidambaram, now in London, said that he does not think that there has been a U-turn by the United States on the issue of Indian investigators getting direct access to Headley. Replying to a question by newspersons, he said that the statement by the US Ambassador in New Delhi Timothy Roemer in no way contradicts what the US Attorney General Eric Holder had told him. He said, Mr. Holder had called him up to inform that Headly would be cooperating with Indian investigators and the judicial process.
