India will be the 2nd largest producer of steel in the world by 2020. Chairman of SAIL C.S.Verma said in Ranchi today that only China would be ahead of India.India is the 4th largest producer of steel at present which grew at the rate of 4.3 percent in the last year. The world steel production witnessed a growth of 1.2 percent. Answering a question Verma said that India's steel consumption is still below the world average. In India, the annual steel consumption is 50 kg per person while the world average is 200 kg per person.On mining in SARANDA jungle area, he said that SAIL is taking care of bio-diversity need of the area.Mining of Iron-ore from Chiriya mines are to be done on fully mechanised manner and the ore would be carried on conveyer belts, 15 kilometer away for further treatment reducing environment harm. Verma also said that SAIL is undertaking a lot of Corporate Social Responsibility Activities in the naxal affected area to reduce the influence of naxal.
