India and Thailand have agreed to work towards doubling the trade by 2014. The two countries have also decided to conclude the negotiations on the comprehensive bilateral trade agreement including goods, services and investment at the earliest. This was revealed by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, in his opening remarks to the media after holding delegation level talks with his Thai counterpart. He said the two leaders also agreed to intensify cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, education, tourism and culture. The Prime Minister said that the two countries will further strengthen cooperation in the fields of defence, counter-terrorism and security. He said, it was also agreed to cooperate to secure the Indian Ocean from the menace of piracy. The Prime Minister said, areas of cooperation in space technology, disaster management and science were also identified. A Ministerial level joint commission will meet this year to follow up on the wide range of bilateral issues. The Prime Minister asserted that he is of the unanimous view that India-Thailand partnership is a factor of peace and stability in the Asia Pacific Region and the Thai Prime Minister's visit has provided political impetus and direction for a closer and more broad based partnership between the two countries. The Prime Minister this evening held delegation level talks with his Thai counterpart. During the day ,he also exchanged views with UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and called on the Vice President and the President.Earlier, talking to reporters Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva sought VISA on arrival for Thai nationals to boost two-way travel. He said that he raised the issue with external affairs minister S M Krishna. In reply to a question Abhisit Vejjajiva said, though his country went through a difficult period last year because of political unrest, Thailand received a record number of 16 million foreign visitors, including eight lakh Indians. During his meeting with capitans of industry he invited investments from Indian companies. Thai Prime Minister said that his country has shortage of skilled manpower and would seek cooperation in this area with India. He said that India is a world leader in the manufacture of drugs and in modern health care and the market in Thailand for medical equipment and supplies is around 800 million US dollars annually. He also said that the Indian construction sector, food processing and services can present Thai businessmen with investment opportunities. The two countries have already abolished the duties on 82 items under an 'Early Harvest Scheme' (EHS) launched in 2004.Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said that India is committed to concluding negotiations with Thailand for a free trade pact by this year-end, a step which will help in doubling bilateral trade of 6 billion USD by 2014. Mr Sharma also sought investment from Thailand in sectors such as infrastructure, agro-processing and gems and jewellery.
