India temporarily suspends its medical mission in Kabul

The Indian Medical Missions in Kabul has been suspended temporarily. But all other missions in Herat, Kandahar, Jalalabad and Mazar-e-Sharif are functioning normally. <br/><br/>Responding to queries by reporters, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said the Indian embassy in Kabul and its other offices in Afghanistan continued to function normally in the face of 'extremely demanding and difficult circumstances.'<br/><br/>The medical missions in Kabul are suspended in the wake of the February 26 terrorist attack in which seven Indians, including a doctor, were killed and several others injured.<br/><br/>The decision to suspend the mission inKabul was taken after the two-day visit of National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon to the Afghan capital.<br/><br/>During his stay, he met Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and senior officials of his government and reviewed the security arrangements for the 4,000 Indians working on various projects in Afghanistan. Menon also met Indian Ambassador in Kabul Jayant Prasad and discussed the security arrangements with him.<br/><br/>Later, he said India will not scale down its developmental operations in Afghanistan<br/>even after the February 26 incident and will not be deterred by such attacks. <br/><br/>During the meeting with President Karzai, Menon gave him a letter from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, which refers to expansion of bilateral relations and continuation of the recovery process of cooperation between India and Afghanistan. <br/><br/>He is the first top Indian official to visit Afghanistan after the February 26 terrorist attack. <br/><br/>Dr Singh, in an address in Parliament yesterday, expressed outrage at the February the attack and gave an assurance that such attacks will not bend the will of the people.<br/><br/>He said India is closely monitoring the developments and will assist the people of Afghanistan in securing their legitimate rights to determine their destiny.<br/><br/>
