India taking all possible steps to assist Lanka to rehabilitate internally displaced persons: Govt

Government today assured the Lok Sabha that it is taking all possible steps to assist Sri Lankan government to rehabilitate internally displaced persons there. Responding to a calling attention motion by T.R. Balu of DMK, the External Affairs Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna said that the establishment of Consulate General in Jaffna will help the process. He said, New Delhi's contribution has been crucial in the humanitarian and resettlement efforts of internally displaced people in the island nation. The Minister said that the India will continue to play a significant role in future for restoring normalcy in the lives of internally displaced people in the northern and eastern parts of the country. He gave the House the details of the assistance given to these people from time to time. Mr. Krishna said that during the recent visit of Sri Lankan President to India, New Delhi announced a major initiative to support a programme for construction of 50 thousand houses and a pilot project of one thousand houses will be launched soon. The External Affairs Minister said that government has also set aside eight hundred million US dollars as line of credit for undertaking reconstruction of railway infrastructure in the northern Sri Lanka. He expressed hope that all railway projects will be completed expeditiously.
