India takes up racial attack issue with Australia

India today took up the issue of assault on Indian nationals in Australia with the government there. Expressing serious concern over the recurring attacks on Indians in Australia, New Delhi hoped that the latest incident will be investigated thoroughly and action will be taken against the culprits behind the incident. The matter has been taken up by the Indian High Commissioner in Canberra with Australian Foreign Minister Mr. Stephen Smith. He also wrote about it the Premier of Victoria about it. The Indian Consul General in Melbourne is also in touch with authorities in Victoria including the police officials. The External Affairs Ministry spokesman Mr. Vishnu Prakash hoped that the authorities will take all necessary steps towards the safety and security of Indians there. He also expressed the hope that decisions already announced by the Australian government prevent such attacks will be put in place at the earliest so that such incidents are not repeated. br/br/The spokesman said the two Indian nationals and two other persons of Indian origin were assaulted by a group of individuals late in the evening on the 12th of this month. One of the Indian national Sukhbir Singh sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment. The police had arrested four persons in connection with the incident who have since been released pending further investigations. Officials of the Consulate General of India in Melbourne are also in touch with members of family of the victims and have assured them all help.
