India created history yesterday by sweeping all the medals in the women's discus throw. Discus thrower Krishna Pooniya became the first Indian woman gold medallist in Commonwealth Games athletics. Pooniya led the historic clean sweep of the discus event by clearing 61.5 meters. Harwant Kaur won the Silver with a throw of 60.66 meters while national record holder Seema Antil claimed the bronze with 58.46 meters. Pooniya's win enabled the country to equal its previous-best gold medal haul in the Games' history and retain the second spot in the medals table behind Australia. At the end of the eighth day of competitions, India's medal tally stood at 30 Gold, 23 Silver and 28 bronze. Australia led the table with a rich haul of 64 Gold, 40 Silver and 39 Bronze. The day otherwise turned out to be a lean day as the hosts won just one gold medal along with a silver and six bronze. Yesterday was a day of mixed fortunes for Indian boxers. The much-heralded squad underperformed with Olympic medal winner Vijender Singh and three others biting the dust in the semis and settling for the bronze. The shock defeat of hot title favourite Vijender against Anthony Ogoro of England led the Indians to lodge a protest after the referee penalised the Indian star towards the fag end of the bout when he led narrowly. The protest, was, however, rejected. But there was consolation with the entry of southpaw Suranjoy Singh, Manoj Kumar and Paramjit Samota into the finals after winning their semi final bouts. Amandeep Singh, Asian champion Jai Bhagwan and Dilbag Singh lost their semi final bouts and had to be content with bronze medals. Women rifle-shooters Tejaswini Sawant and Meena Kumari also grabbed a bronze in the women's 50 meters rifle prone event.The other major story of the day was the positive dope test by Nigerian Oludamola who tested positive for stimulant methylhexaneamine and was placed under provisional suspension pending a test of her “B” sample. The Nigerian had got the gold in dramatic circumstances, when Australian Sally Pearson was stripped of her medal in the women's 100 meters sprint for a false start. Meanwhile, Pearson won the 100 meters hurdles gold yesterday.
