India successfully test fires two indigenously built air-to-air missile 'Astra'

India has successfully test fired two indigenously built air-to-air missile 'Astra' from its Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Orissa coast on Monday.The first 25 km range missile was tested at the Chandipur test range at about 9.45 a.m. while the second missile was test fired at 1206 hrs. Mr S P Dash, Director of the ITR said the test was a success.Weighing 154 kg, Astra missile is 3.8 meter long having 1.78 meter diameter.The missile can carry a warhead of 15 kg. The single-stage solid fuel Astra missile is said to be more advanced in its category than the contemporary Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles.It is capable of engaging and destroying highly maneuverable supersonic aerial targets. Senior officials of Defence Research Development Origanisation (DRDO) and other senior defence officials were present during the test fire.
