India has successfully test-fired indigenously developed surface-to-surface nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipore-on-Sea off Orissa coast. The missile was blasted off from launch complex no 3 in the ITR about 6.50 on Friday morning.

Prithvi-II with a length of 9 meter and one meter diameter can carry a fly load of 500 to 1000 kg. It can hit targets within a range of 250 km. It uses an advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory.

The test firing of surface-to-surface missile, which has already been inducted in Indian Armed Forces, was a user trial by the Army’s Strategic Force Command.

Prithvi is the first ballistic missile developed under India’s prestigious Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme and is propelled by liquid propulsion twin engine.

The trial of Prithvi-II was tracked by a battery of sophisticated radars and electro-optic telemetry stations positioned in different locations for the post-launch analysis.

Senior Army officials and scientists were present when Prithvi-II was launched on Friday.
